Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) and an analogue of the endogenous immunomodulator tuftsin, exhibiting both anxiolytic and immunomodulatory activities. Clinical studies demonstrate that its anxiolytic efficacy is comparable to classical benzodiazepines, yet it lacks sedative and muscle-relaxant side effects, with effects persisting for up to one week post-treatment. Its core mechanisms involve modulation of monoamine (norepinephrine, serotonin) metabolism in the brain and enhancement of GABAergic system function. Selank also exerts antiviral effects (e.g., against influenza) by upregulating IFN-α expression, shows neuroprotection in cerebral ischemia models via regulation of genes such as Hspa1 and P2ry12, and provides organ protection under stress conditions by inhibiting oxidative stress and apoptosis pathways.
